Katelyn's Birthday and Granada - Day 1

Here are a few pictures from Katelyn’s birthday celebration!

Marina (host mom) made chocolate mousse for Katelyn, and it was super delicious! Apparently the tradition is to shove the bday girl’s hand into the cake, which Anastasia (host sister) was glad to do.

Marina also tried to make empanadas (one of our favorites!), but most of the dough was bad, so instead she turned it into empanada pizza, which was also super delicious!

Then Katelyn and I went out to meet up with some friends for wine and dessert. This is our other American sister, Marit.

Here’s all of us girls out!
Heather, Kait, Sarah, Emily, Me, and Katelyn! (And the owner of the shop in the mirror taking a picture lol)

Two weekends ago, I went with my program to Granada. It’s in the southern part of Spain, so it was about a 5-6 hour bus ride. Not fun when you are sick, but it was not awful.

We got in, and immediately decided to grab some lunch. A food called schwarma was recommended by the director of our program (he is from Granada), so we hunted it down, and it was super tasty. Like a Donor Kebab, but a different sauce and in like a pita pocket, not just wrapped in a pita.

We walked around for a little bit after lunch to see some of the sites. This is the Alhambra from down below:

Then we went and found some coffee and tea!

Later that night, we went for a walk to a famous view point. When important people (like Bill Clinton) come to Granada, they are taken here to see the Alhambra at night. It is also a very popular place for people to go to smoke pot, apparently.

The restaurant up at the viewpoint. This would be a cool place to eat, I wish I could have found the menu.

On the way to the flamenco show, our director pointed out this house:

We went to a cave and watched a flamenco show! It was a little crowded with 70+ people, but it was fun and interesting to watch. Very loud.

Then Kait, who had been to Granada before, got us started bar-hopping for tapas. Pretty much every time you buy a round of drinks, you get a plate of free tapas. It’s awesome! We didn’t need to eat diner!
This is Spanish tortilla:

Mike pouring sangria! Yum!

Turkey on bread with olive oil:

Peter and Emily with tinto de verano (essentially red wine with like lemon Fanta mixed in…it’s like a wine soft drink, not my fav)

I tried to take a candid, but Sarah noticed.
